January 13, 2026
Don't let "shiny object syndrome" derail your digital foundation. Here is how to handle the rise of AI shopping & search for your business.
It's your weekly dose of clarity and insight on all things tech & business from Dream in Digital! Each week, I'm here to share my thoughts to help you make the most of today's technology and build a business that genuinely supports the life you want to live.
This Week’s Core Focus:
Managing New Tech & Trends
Earlier this week, a client forwarded me an email they got from Shopify notifying them that their products were going to be eligible to be displayed on “Agentic Storefronts.” I had heard of AI and shopping in context together, but hearing this term was new to me! After diving a bit more into the email and doing my own research, it was clear to me that “Agentic Storefronts” are here, and they're actually going to be a thing that businesses will need to account for within their digital presence. On the one hand, it feels cool to be involved with work on the cutting edge of technology, but on the other hand, my mind immediately goes to, “how does this not become a distraction that takes away from building the right digital foundation?” I feel like this dilemma of chasing new tech & trends versus sticking with what has worked is a common issue in today's society, so let's break down some core takeaways to help find the best middle ground.
Acknowledge the New, but Keep Emotions in Check: Whenever something new comes onto the scene, I tend to be a little skeptical and often just count new things as “noise”… or, I tend to get SO EXCITED that I want to dive head first into it and restructure my entire life around it! You can see where the ends of the spectrum are, can’t you? 😅 Obviously, neither of these ends are a sound course of action. Therefore, it’s important to maintain a balance where you’re staying up to date with the new tech and trends that are coming into play, but you’re not over reacting and letting something new and “shiny” steer you off your charted course.
Take Time to Play: One of the best ways to find balance in relation to the above is to make time to play. When you create dedicated space to play with the new tech, or allocate a controlled amount of time to dive deeper into the new trend, and the why behind all of it, you can then start to get a better understanding of what’s going on, and how you can strategically integrate it into your business… or not. Sometimes the best decisions/investments are the ones that you never make. Other times, having at least a small foot in the door and/or establishing the basics of the new tech for your business is a good starting point.
Stick with the Foundation: While you’re staying up to date with and keeping an open mind for the new, and taking time to research & test things out to make the best strategic decisions for yourself or your business, it’s important that you don’t let the “shiny new toy” sway your day-to-day work and decisions. Make sure that you continue to prioritize the foundations that you’ve already built.
Tech Tip of the Week:
Agentic Storefronts
The Problem: What in the world is an “Agentic Storefront” and how might this impact me and my business?
The Solution: Let me share with you a quick summary of some of my recent research, and try to explain things easier…
As more people and companies integrate AI into their daily lives, businesses need to make sure that their products and services are optimized for Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, etc., just like they would optimize their websites and storefronts for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) - Google, Bing, etc.
Although we’re not fully here yet, the future of tech is creating a user experience where someone can use an AI chat to find what they’re looking for, review the best available brands, and complete a purchase — all from within an AI chat. That’s powerful stuff!
So, how do you as a business owner prepare for this new method of discovery, search, and sale?
Clean Your Data: AI agents don't care about pretty fonts or other user-friendly web design; they care about Structured Data. Use Shopify’s "Default Listing" and Metafields to ensure your product attributes (size, material, SKU) are machine-readable.
Update Your Knowledge Base: Use tools like the Knowledge Base App to feed your return policies and FAQs to these agents. If an AI agent can't verify your shipping speed or return policy in real-time, it will skip your product for a competitor who has that data ready.
Stay Foundational: Remember, while the AI handles the discovery, the fulfillment, trust, and brand value still happen in your court. The "shiny new toy" only works if your backend foundation is rock solid.
